New York — Fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise will have to wait longer to experience the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, which has now been scheduled for release on May 26, 2026, according to a statement from Rockstar Games. The game was initially expected to launch later this year, leading to disappointment among eager players.
“While we understand this is later than many anticipated, our commitment has always been to surpass your expectations,” the company said. “We appreciate your patience as we take the extra time necessary to ensure the quality fans deserve.”
The Grand Theft Auto series, widely regarded as one of the most successful video game franchises, has sold millions of copies globally. Since the release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, fans have eagerly awaited a new installment, with GTA V achieving over 200 million units sold.
Market analysts projected that GTA 6 could potentially break records as the most lucrative launch in entertainment history, despite the postponement possibly affecting short-term revenue. Wedbush Securities estimated anticipated sales at $6.35 billion for fiscal year 2026, down from previous expectations of $8 billion. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, which oversees Rockstar Games, voiced his support for the decision to delay the game. Zelnick emphasized the importance of allowing developers the time needed to fully realize their artistic vision. “We fully endorse Rockstar Games in taking additional time to deliver a groundbreaking experience for Grand Theft Auto VI that surpasses audience expectations,” Zelnick stated.
