Jerusalem, Israel – A historic ceasefire agreement has brought an end to 13 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, offering hope for peace in the region. The deal, facilitated by the US and France, aims to cease the fighting in Lebanon and ensure Israel’s security against terrorist threats emanating from Hezbollah and other armed groups operating in Lebanon.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hezbollah has 60 days to remove its armed presence from southern Lebanon, while Israeli forces are to withdraw from the area over the same period. The ceasefire, described as a permanent cessation of hostilities by US President Joe Biden, is based on the full implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which called for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon.
The agreement outlines that Lebanon must prevent Hezbollah and other armed groups from launching operations against Israel. In return, Israel commits to refraining from offensive military operations targeting Lebanese territory. The Lebanese government will lead efforts to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure in southern Lebanon, with the support of 10,000 Lebanese army troops who will be deployed to the region.
The US and France will provide assistance to the Lebanese army in fulfilling its obligations under the agreement, aimed at preventing Hezbollah from rearming in the region. The Tripartite Mechanism, involving Unifil, the Israeli military, and the Lebanese army, will be reorganized and enhanced to monitor and enforce the commitments made by both parties.
Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel emphasized the country’s right to self-defense in case of any violations by Hezbollah. Both Israel and Lebanon retain the right to respond to threats consistent with international law. However, Lebanese officials have expressed opposition to any actions that violate Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Overall, the ceasefire agreement represents a significant step towards lasting peace in the region, with the hope of strengthening stability and security for both Israel and Lebanon.
