A father from Upstate New York reportedly killed his 14-year-old honor roll daughter before taking his own life. Before the incident, 51-year-old Christopher Wood, had called his estranged wife, Heather Wood. During the chilling call, he informed her that “this is how it ends for us.”
When the teen girl didn’t show up for school, Heather asked the police to conduct a wellness check on her to ensure the student’s safety.
Ava Wood, a ninth-grader at Durgee Junior High School in Baldwinsville, was found in her bed on Friday with a gunshot wound in her head. Police later discovered her father in another bedroom dead by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities also found a shotgun laying nearby.
Christopher sent Heather harassing text messages and was involved in a stalking incident against her in March 2022.
The two were still married, but had separated and were living apart, according to Baldwinsville Police Chief Michael Lefancheck. Ava resided mostly with her father, he added.
The school community was shattered by this tragedy as well. Ava was an active student at school, participating in track and field and playing junior varsity soccer, as reported by The Post-Standard.
Sunday night, Ava’s friends, classmates and teammates gathered at St. Mary’s Church for a prayer service and a candlelight vigil in her honor. Her soccer teammates, wearing their team jerseys.
Her former team expressed that Ava, an honor student, was a fun and competitive person. No matter what, they shared that she always showed respect for others.
The Rev. Clifford Auth, pastor of St. Mary’s, said that Ava was an example to learn from in a world that can sometimes celebrates negative things.
