Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Suspected U.S. airstrikes in Yemen’s rebel-held capital led to casualties, the Houthis reported Monday. The attacks, believed to be in response to the rebels’ actions against shipping in the region, have resulted in over 120 deaths since their start a month ago, according to the Health Ministry of the Houthis. The U.S. military’s Central Command has been conducting the strikes as part of a campaign aimed at the Houthis, without acknowledging direct involvement. The White House has authorized over 200 strikes so far, with the latest targeting areas in Hodeida, al-Jawaf, and Marib governorates.
In addition to the airstrikes, the Houthis claimed to have shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone in Yemen’s Hajjah governorate. The rebels have been targeting drones with surface-to-air missiles, including Iranian-made missiles, despite Iran’s denial of arming the rebels. The ongoing conflict in Yemen has drawn international attention, with the U.S. ramping up its military operations under President Donald Trump’s administration, targeting key rebel personnel and urban areas. The U.S. campaign is also seen as a strategy to pressure Iran over its nuclear program.
The escalation of violence in Yemen has raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in the region, as civilians continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. The Houthis’ attacks on merchant vessels and American warships have added to the complexity of the situation, prompting increased intervention from the U.S. military. The intense airstrikes and drone attacks have further destabilized the region, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis that requires urgent attention from the international community.
As the conflict in Yemen shows no signs of abating, the Trump administration’s aggressive approach towards the rebels has sparked debates about the effectiveness of military intervention in the region. The civilian casualties and infrastructure damage caused by the airstrikes and drone attacks underscore the need for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. With tensions escalating and regional powers getting involved, the situation in Yemen remains volatile and unpredictable. The international community must work together to de-escalate the conflict and find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
