Brisbane, Australia — Wayne Dopson has long been immersed in the property market, operating a renovation business that specializes in transforming kitchens, bathrooms, and decks. After years of working with traditional combustion-engine vehicles, Dopson made a significant shift by acquiring the BYD Shark, a hybrid pickup truck, in March for approximately AUD 64,000 (around USD 41,000).
Dopson, who previously drove a diesel-powered VW Amarok, found it challenging to discover a worthy upgrade. The options available, including other conventional trucks like the Ford Ranger, appeared similar and uninspiring. He sought something innovative and different, leading him to the BYD Shark.
Since purchasing the Shark, Dopson has logged about 2,000 kilometers and is impressed by its performance. He describes the hybrid truck as technologically advanced, highlighting its smooth driving experience and powerful engine. “It drives like a sports car,” he said, noting its capacity to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds.
One of the most appealing aspects of the Shark is its cost-effectiveness. With 30 solar panels installed on his property, Dopson charges the vehicle during the day for free. Charging at night is also economical, costing him less than AUD 2 (approximately USD 1.03). Comparatively, he estimates he spent around AUD 14 (USD 9) daily on diesel for the Amarok. This considerable savings significantly benefits his bottom line as he uses the vehicle primarily for work.
Equipped with six kilowatts of power outlets in the truck bed, the Shark also allows him to run tools and appliances directly on job sites, enhancing its utility for his renovation projects. The vehicle’s design includes streamlined features, such as a tailgate that opens with a key fob—a convenience especially useful when hands are full.
The BYD Shark is classified as an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), featuring two electric motors and a petrol engine that functions as a generator. Dopson reports that while he typically drives less than 100 kilometers daily on electric power alone, the petrol engine provides reassurance for longer trips, extending the vehicle’s range to approximately 800 kilometers.
Despite his satisfaction with the truck, Dopson expresses concerns about its long-term resale value due to the rapid evolution of hybrid and electric vehicle technology. Notable competitors, including Nissan and Ford, are poised to release new models, sparking uncertainty over how the Shark will hold up against them in the future. Nevertheless, it comes with a warranty of up to six years, which he plans to take advantage of before reconsidering his options.
Reflecting on the growing presence of Chinese electric vehicle brands in Australia, Dopson sees potential for improved quality and longer warranty periods. He believes the introduction of these vehicles could enhance consumer choice in a market traditionally dominated by established brands.
While recognizing that the Shark may not have the same off-road capabilities as other utes, Dopson is content with its performance for everyday tasks and light off-roading. He appreciates the eco-friendly aspect of the vehicle, finding joy in driving without the burden of high fuel costs or environmental impact. For him, the BYD Shark represents a promising blend of luxury, practicality, and sustainability, making it an ideal companion for both work and leisure.
