(AbsoluteNews.com) – Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is up for reelection this year and at least three Republicans are running to replace the controversial congresswoman. One of those candidates is a former basketball player who has been an outspoken advocate for mental health.
On Tuesday, February 22, former NBA player Royce White announced he’s running for the GOP nomination for the fifth congressional district in Minnesota. He stood outside of the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis to announce his candidacy. The conservative-hopeful has a past of defending Republican and Democratic positions, something that could play in his favor in a district that has been Blue for more than 50 years. During an interview after his announcement, he said he hopes to shake up the district and convince people they’ve been voting against their own best interests.
Today I’m officially announcing that I will be running for Congress in MN-CD5 against Ilhan Omar. It’s time to clean house. God Bless America! The Fight Continues… #Godspeed pic.twitter.com/Wx3GLZ8AcY

Steve Bannon, a former adviser to former President Donald Trump, endorsed White. He called him a “brave soul” who has stood up for what’s right. Bannon called White a hero for giving up his NBA career to advocate for people who have mental health problems. He’s also been an outspoken critic of the Chinese genocide of the Uyghur people.
White is optimistic he’ll be able to bring change to the district.
