Illegal immigrant on public assistance arrested for sexual assault of jogger

HERNDON, VA – On the evening of November 18, a woman walking home along the W&OD Trail in Herndon was assaulted and raped, marking a rare instance of stranger rape in the community. The suspect, identified as Dennis Umberto Navarette Romero, is reportedly in the United States illegally, according to court documents.

Herndon Police Chief Macky Deor emphasized the gravity of the crime, noting that such an incident hasn’t occurred in the area during his 12-year tenure. He called for full prosecution to ensure the safety of the community and to prevent future occurrences.

Navarette Romero, who is unemployed and receives public assistance, has a history of legal troubles. Court documents reveal a string of past offenses, including sex crimes in Washington, D.C., resisting arrest, and various charges in Virginia. These include assault, battery, trespassing, using a stolen vehicle, weapon violations, public intoxication, loitering, and indecent exposure.

Further investigations uncovered a 2017 allegation of sexual battery against several juveniles. Additionally, he has been involved in violent encounters with law enforcement, including an incident where he allegedly attempted to strangle a police officer. Although initially charged with felonies, these were later reduced to misdemeanor assault.

Chief Deor expressed concern over the potential deportation of Navarette Romero without accountability for his crimes, fearing he could return to the U.S. and pose a continued threat. The chief hopes for a stringent legal process to ensure justice and community protection.

The case has sparked discussions about the challenges of dealing with repeat offenders and the complexities surrounding immigration-related crime enforcement. The Herndon community remains vigilant as they await the proceedings and potential outcomes.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward, underscoring the importance of community cooperation in ensuring justice is served.
