DALLAS, Texas – A former pastor of a Texas megachurch faces child sexual abuse charges in Oklahoma, according to the state’s attorney general’s office. Robert Preston Morris, 63, has been indicted on five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. The alleged abuse began in the early 1980s when the victim, identified as C.C. in the indictment, was just 12 years old. The abuse took place while Morris, then a traveling evangelist, was staying with the victim’s family in Hominy, Oklahoma. The abuse is said to have continued for four years.
The victim, Cindy Clemishire, publicly acknowledged her accusations against Morris and is grateful for the authorities’ efforts in bringing the indictment. Clemishire expressed hope that justice would prevail after almost 43 years since the abuse occurred. She insisted on being named in her statement regarding the case.
The Attorney General, Gentner Drummond, emphasized the importance of accountability for those who prey on children, particularly in cases where individuals exploit positions of trust like pastors. The victim, Clemishire, has waited years for justice to be served. Morris operated the Gateway Church in Southlake, a Dallas suburb, before stepping down last year following the emergence of allegations against him on a religious watchdog blog.
The church, known for its multiple locations and large congregation, pledged support for Clemishire and others affected by the situation. Morris’ political activities were notable, including hosting former President Donald Trump for an event on race relations and the economy in 2020 at the church.
If convicted, Morris could face up to 20 years in prison for each of the five charges. As of now, he is not in custody. Phone attempts to reach Morris were unsuccessful, and his legal representation status remains unclear.Authorities emphasized the severity of the case due to the nature of the alleged offenses and the time it took for justice to be pursued. Clemishire’s bravery in coming forward has shed light on a dark chapter in the church’s history, prompting a reckoning for alleged abuses of power by religious leaders.
