Injured Rangers Star Josh Jung Placed on 10-Day IL – Will Return April 7! What This Means for the Team’s Lineup!

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers have made a tough decision this afternoon, placing third baseman Josh Jung on the 10-day injured list due to neck spasms. This setback comes after Jung’s 2024 season was cut short due to a fractured wrist in 2021. The move is retroactive to March 29, allowing Jung to be eligible for activation on April 7. Infielder Jonathan Ornelas has been called up from the minors to fill Jung’s spot on the roster.

Despite the frustration of being sidelined once again, team officials remain optimistic about Jung’s recovery. Manager Bruce Bochy has indicated that Jung’s neck ailment is not expected to keep him out for an extended period. The decision to place Jung on the injured list was influenced by an injury suffered by utility player Josh Smith, who collided with the wall during a recent game, leading to a left quad contusion. Smith is currently day-to-day.

With Jung and Smith out, the Rangers have turned to Ornelas to provide depth in the infield. While Ornelas may not offer significant offensive contributions, his defensive skills and base-stealing ability make him a valuable asset. Ezequiel Duran and Smith (once healthy) will also provide support at first base in Jung’s absence.

Jung’s absence will undoubtedly be felt in the lineup, given his strong performance in 2023 where he was named an All-Star. Despite the setback, Smith has proven himself to be a reliable replacement, earning accolades such as the AL Silver Slugger award for his versatility and solid bat in the past season. The Rangers will rely on Smith to step up once again in 2025.
