RACINE, WI – A shocking incident at the Racine County Jail has resulted in a murder charge against an inmate after a violent altercation left another inmate dead. The attack, which lasted less than a minute, has sparked demands for accountability and answers from the victim’s family.
Joseph Lee, the victim, was removed from life support on Sunday, days after the alleged assault by fellow inmate DeVante Carraway. Carraway reportedly attacked Lee due to a disagreement over noise and personal matters. The incident has raised questions about the safety and oversight within the jail.
According to court documents, the confrontation occurred on New Year’s Eve during the lunch hour. Carraway and Lee had just left a cell when Carraway struck Lee with a powerful punch to the head. The force of the blow caused Lee to hit his head against the cell door, initiating a brutal 47-second assault.
Surveillance footage captured the shocking sequence of events. After the initial blow, Carraway continued to attack Lee, slamming him to the ground with such force that Lee inhaled several of his gold teeth. The violence escalated when Carraway lifted Lee and dropped him headfirst into a 55-gallon trash can.
Inmates who witnessed the attack were reportedly intimidated by Carraway, who allegedly threatened those who attempted to intervene. Despite the severity of the situation, no inmate activated the emergency alarm, delaying assistance for over 20 minutes until a correctional officer discovered Lee.
The victim’s family is particularly concerned about the response, or lack thereof, from jail staff. Their attorney emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, suggesting that procedural failures may have contributed to the tragedy.
Carraway remains in custody and has been isolated from other inmates since the incident. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that Carraway was separated following the attack. He is scheduled to appear in court soon.
As the investigation continues, questions linger about the protocols in place to prevent such incidents and ensure the safety of inmates. The case has prompted scrutiny of the jail’s management and highlights the need for comprehensive reforms.
