Tel Aviv, Israel – Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi called for a state inquiry into the prime minister and government during the chief of staff changeover ceremony in Tel Aviv. The ceremony, which saw incoming chief Eyal Zamir replace Halevi, took place on Wednesday in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and leaders of the defense establishment.
Halevi emphasized the need for a state inquiry not to assign blame, but to address underlying issues and facilitate necessary improvements. He stressed the importance of transparency and loyalty to the State above all else, rejecting personal loyalties.
Addressing Netanyahu directly, Halevi acknowledged the challenges of obtaining operational approvals at higher ranks, while appreciating the prime minister’s support for proactive military action. However, he criticized the neglect of wounded soldiers in enemy territory, highlighting the urgency to secure the release of Israeli hostages held captive.
The outgoing IDF chief urged the government to involve the haredi community in national service to alleviate the strain on the reservist army. In response, incoming chief Eyal Zamir articulated a commitment to promoting equal burden sharing in military service, particularly advocating for increased haredi participation in the IDF.
Zamir emphasized the need to expand the army’s size and budget, emphasizing the importance of action in addition to upholding Jewish traditions. He pledged to prioritize the safe return of all hostages and Israeli residents from both the North and the South regions.
In his address, Halevi also highlighted the imperative of collective efforts to secure the freedom of all hostages, a crucial aspect for achieving victory. The IDF’s duty to follow political orders was underscored, alongside the call for a comprehensive state inquiry to address systemic issues within the government and armed forces.
