Gaza City, Gaza Strip – Eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and three in the occupied West Bank were killed by Israeli forces over the last 24 hours, according to Palestinian officials on Tuesday. This comes as a ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza has held since late January, despite ongoing tensions. Israeli forces have reportedly killed dozens of Palestinians in Gaza during the ceasefire for approaching troops or entering unauthorized areas.
Hamas has indicated that new round of ceasefire talks have begun, with Israel seeking the release of hostages and discussions on a lasting truce. However, Hamas is pushing for negotiations on the more challenging second phase of the ceasefire, including the release of remaining hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
In an effort to pressure Hamas, Israel has cut off essential supplies such as electricity, food, and medicine to over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. The United Nations and other aid organizations have criticized Israel for violating international law by blocking humanitarian assistance.
Elsewhere, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have announced the resumption of attacks on Israeli-linked vessels if aid is not allowed to enter Gaza. The Houthis have targeted multiple ships in the past, including those with no direct connection to the conflict. Additionally, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz visited a strategic mountain in Syria to emphasize Israel’s presence in the region and ensure security along the border.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s President Erdogan cautiously praised a recent agreement between Syrian Kurds and Damascus to consolidate control under a central authority, calling it a step in the right direction. The agreement aims to bring stability to Syria, aligning with Turkey’s interests in the region.
In response to escalating tensions, Israel has launched deadly airstrikes in Lebanon, targeting a Hezbollah commander and other militants. The strikes come as Israel, Lebanon, France, and the US discuss key issues, including the Israeli military control in southern Lebanon and the border between the two countries.
Amidst these developments, China, Iran, and Russia conducted joint naval drills in the Middle East, raising concerns as tensions rise between Tehran and the US. Additionally, UN-backed rights experts heard testimony from Palestinians alleging abuse by Israeli forces during the conflict in Gaza.
As the situation in the region remains volatile, Palestinians mourn the loss of lives in Gaza and the West Bank, with ongoing clashes and incidents of violence reported. The fragile ceasefire continues to be tested, with challenges and complexities overshadowing the prospects for lasting peace and stability in the region.
