San Francisco, CA – The James Beard Foundation unveiled its highly anticipated list of finalists for the prestigious James Beard Award, recognizing excellence in the culinary world. The announcement showcased nominees across various categories, including Outstanding Restaurateur, Best New Restaurant, and regional Best Chef awards. Noteworthy additions this year include Best New Bar, Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, and Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service.
Among the honorees were Chad Houser, awarded the Humanitarian of the Year, and Toni Tipton-Martin, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The foundation also recognized five Impact Award winners, including Anthony Edwards, Jr., Angie Craig, and Dune Lankard.
Notably, the 2025 James Beard Awards come on the heels of the five-year anniversary of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted significant changes to the awards program. Following criticism of racial inequity and lack of diversity, the foundation conducted an audit of procedures and expanded or revamped categories to promote age and geographic diversity. Adjustments included renaming the Rising Star award to Emerging Chef without an age cutoff, and the introduction of separate regional awards for Texas, California, and New York.
Last month, the foundation announced the recipients of the America’s Classics award, acknowledging six locally owned restaurants with timeless appeal. The annual longlist highlighted semifinalists from various regions in the United States, with media awards nominees set to be disclosed on May 7. The ultimate winners in the restaurant and chef categories will be celebrated at a gala ceremony on Monday, June 16, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
The list of finalists features remarkable talent in the culinary world, with the Outstanding Restaurateur category spotlighting establishments that prioritize community-building, creativity in entrepreneurship, and integrity in operations. The Outstanding Chef award recognizes culinary leaders who exemplify high standards and serve as positive influences for their peers.
Restaurants honored in the Outstanding Restaurant category demonstrate unwavering excellence in food, atmosphere, hospitality, and operations. Chefs recognized in regional categories, such as California, Great Lakes, and Mid-Atlantic, set the bar high with their culinary skills and leadership abilities.
The foundation also celebrates individuals in beverage service and cocktail service, highlighting professionals who demonstrate creativity, consistency, and innovation while fostering a sense of hospitality. The inclusion of categories such as Best New Bar reflects the evolving landscape of the culinary industry, showcasing establishments that excel in sourcing, service, and atmosphere.
As the culinary world continues to evolve, the James Beard Foundation remains at the forefront of recognizing and honoring excellence in the industry. The upcoming awards ceremony promises to be a celebration of talent, creativity, and dedication to culinary excellence.
