NEW YORK (AP) — Veteran character actor John Ashton, known for his role as the gruff but lovable police detective John Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” film series, has passed away at the age of 76. Ashton’s family confirmed his death in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Thursday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Throughout his 50-year career, Ashton appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including “Midnight Run,” “Little Big League,” and “Gone Baby Gone.” However, he is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Taggart in the iconic “Beverly Hills Cop” movies where he starred alongside Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley and Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood.
Taggart, affectionately called “Sarge” by Billy, brought a unique dynamic to the trio in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series. Despite his by-the-book nature, Taggart often found himself entangled in Axel’s unconventional methods. Ashton appeared in the first two films of the franchise and recently reprised his role in the Netflix revival, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” released earlier this year.
In addition to his role in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, Ashton showcased his versatility as an actor in Martin Brest’s 1988 comedy “Midnight Run,” where he portrayed a rival bounty hunter. His memorable audition with Robert De Niro, as recounted by Ashton in an interview with Collider, highlighted his bold approach to acting, ultimately earning him the role.
Beyond his on-screen success, Ashton leaves behind a legacy of a loving family, including his wife of 24 years, Robin Hoye, two children, three stepchildren, a grandson, and siblings. His impact on the entertainment industry will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
