Chesapeake City, Maryland – The National Dog Show recently crowned a pug named Vito as the 2023 Best in Show. The competition, held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, saw over 2,000 canines vying for the prestigious title. Judges evaluated the dogs based on their overall appearance, temperament, and structure in accordance with their breed’s official standard.
Best in show judge, George Milutinovich, expressed his admiration for Vito, stating, “Never seen him before. Wow. Just wow. Lots of dog in a small package.” Vito’s handler, Michael Scott, shared his optimism leading up to the competition, highlighting Vito’s beautiful head, expression, and great outline. Vito’s victory earned his owners, Joy Barbieri and Rebecca Movall of Stanfordville, New York, a $20,000 prize.
The National Dog Show, which has been an annual tradition since 1933, is an all-breed show organized by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Any AKC-registered dog is eligible to compete in the show, which first began in 1879. Alongside Vito, the Reserve Best in Show title went to Verde, a Welsh terrier, and his handler Gabriel Rangel from Rialto, California.
