SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Popular South Korean singer Wheesung has tragically passed away at the age of 43. The K-pop sensation, whose real name is Choi Whee-sung, was discovered deceased in his home in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul on Monday evening. Fire officials reported that Wheesung, who had a history of drug abuse, was found in a state of cardiac arrest.
Reports from The Korea Herald indicated that it was Wheesung’s mother who contacted emergency services upon discovering her son. Law enforcement suspects that the singer had already passed away for a considerable amount of time. An autopsy has been requested to determine the cause of death and police are currently investigating the matter.
Law enforcement officials have ruled out foul play or forced entry into Wheesung’s residence, leading them to believe that his death was not a result of homicide. Wheesung was known for blending R&B with K-pop and had a successful career in the music industry. He rose to fame in 2002 with his single “Can’t We?” and went on to release several hit songs throughout his career.
Despite his professional success, Wheesung faced personal struggles, including a history of drug abuse and legal issues. In 2019, he was indicted on charges of illegal use of propofol and was found unconscious in a public bathroom after using etomidate. The singer also reportedly battled depression and panic disorder, receiving psychiatric treatment following the loss of his father.
Wheesung’s passing has left the music industry and his fans in mourning. Tributes have poured in from fellow artists and fans, recognizing his talent and the impact of his music on their lives. The cancellation of his upcoming concert has further highlighted the loss of a talented artist who left a lasting legacy in Korean music.
