Los Angeles, California – LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo has made the decision to step down from his position at the end of the 2025 MLS season. Cherundolo shared his announcement today, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team. After careful consideration and discussions with his family, he has decided to return to Germany. Despite his love for Los Angeles and LAFC, Cherundolo believes that this move is in the best interest of his family.

Cherundolo, 46, has had a successful tenure with LAFC since he took on the role in January 2022 as the club’s second head coach. He made history by becoming the only MLS coach to win the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup in his first season in 2022. Under his leadership, LAFC secured the 2024 U.S. Open Cup championship and achieved an impressive record of 87-43-26 (W-L-T) in all competitions, clinching three major trophies and appearing in six finals.

LAFC Co-President & General Manager, John Thorrington, commended Cherundolo for his leadership and coaching abilities, noting his significant contributions to the team’s success. Thorrington expressed support for Cherundolo’s decision to prioritize his family and reaffirmed the club’s commitment to pursuing trophies in the remainder of the 2025 season.

Throughout his time with LAFC, Cherundolo led the team to notable achievements, including reaching the final of the Concacaf Champions League and MLS Cup in his second season in 2023. He also secured the number one seed in the Western Conference in 2024 and became the seventh-fastest coach in MLS history to reach 50 regular-season wins. Cherundolo’s impact on the team has been widely recognized, with his 58 regular-season wins since 2022 leading the league during that period.

LAFC Lead Managing Owner, Bennett Rosenthal, conveyed his appreciation for Cherundolo’s commitment to the club and emphasized his integral role in upholding the Black & Gold standard. Rosenthal expressed well wishes for Cherundolo in his future endeavors and assured that he will always be considered a part of the LAFC family.

As a San Diego native, Cherundolo has amassed a successful record in the MLS regular season and playoffs, further solidifying his legacy as a respected coach in the league. Cherundolo’s decision to step down at the end of the 2025 season marks a new chapter for LAFC, as the team prepares to continue its pursuit of success on the field.
