Los Angeles, California – Actress Lizzy Caplan recently revealed details about the scrapped Gambit movie that never came to fruition.
In 2017, rumors surfaced that Caplan was considered to star alongside Channing Tatum in a standalone film centered around the X-Men character Gambit. Despite initial plans, the film project was ultimately abandoned. However, Caplan provided insight into the potential direction of the superhero movie in a recent interview.
Reflecting on the project, Caplan shared, “We were close to starting the production. There were discussions about it, and I even had meetings with Channing and the producers.” She mentioned the original concept for the film was to create a ’30s screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which she believed would have been enjoyable.
Gambit, a character introduced in 1990, made his live-action debut in the X-Men franchise in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. However, plans for a standalone Gambit film were halted after the Disney-Fox merger in 2019.
Despite the setback, Tatum eventually had the opportunity to bring Gambit to life in the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine. Expressing his gratitude for the chance to portray the beloved mutant on screen, Tatum credited Ryan Reynolds for advocating on his behalf.
As for Caplan, known for her role in The Class, she expressed contentment with not pursuing a role in a superhero film, acknowledging the stress associated with such projects. She humorously mentioned her manager’s relief at the decision.
The scrapped Gambit movie continues to serve as a reminder of the complexities in bringing comic book characters to the big screen, with Caplan and Tatum’s experiences shedding light on the unpredictability of Hollywood’s movie-making process.
