Man arrested after going to ex-girlfriend’s house and stabbing a man multiple times

OYSTER BAY COVE, NY – A quiet community was shaken over the weekend when a violent altercation unfolded in a normally peaceful neighborhood. Authorities report that a Suffolk County man, identified as 20-year-old Matthew Nickerson from Fort Salonga, drove over 20 miles to an Oyster Bay Cove residence where a confrontation took place, culminating in a stabbing incident.

According to police, the altercation occurred Saturday evening at the home of Nickerson’s ex-girlfriend. The situation escalated when Nickerson allegedly attacked a 24-year-old man inside the house, stabbing him four times in the chest with a box cutter. The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

The neighborhood, known for its tranquility, was left in shock. Residents expressed disbelief that such a violent act could occur in their community. “It’s heartbreaking how this can happen,” remarked one local, reflecting the sentiments of many who are grappling with the incident’s impact.

Police apprehended Nickerson shortly after the alleged attack, noting that he was covered in blood at the time of his arrest. He faces felony assault charges and was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead, where his family was present but declined to comment on the case.

Court records reveal that Nickerson was already on probation for a previous assault charge in Suffolk County, adding a layer of complexity to the legal proceedings. His bail has been set at $20,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

As the legal process unfolds, the community is left pondering the broader issues at play. A neighbor expressed concern over mental health, stating, “I think there’s a lot of mental illness that needs to be addressed, and a lot of people need help. There’s not enough help.”

The incident has sparked conversations about mental health resources and the support systems available to those in need, with neighbors urging for increased attention to these critical issues.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, hoping for justice and healing in the wake of the unsettling event.
