Chicago Man Charged in Sunday Shooting That Wounded 7-Year-Old Boy -WTTW
A boy was shot while riding in a car with his parents and several other people. The life-threatening shooting occurred after a gunman allegedly fired multiple shots at the car.
This defendant tried to break into a family’s car twice, and then opened fire on the people inside. The gunman was arrested following a brief foot pursuit, and later made unprompted statements to police saying he believed the vehicle was an “opp”. He also claimed that he wasn’t aware there were children in the car that he shot at.
A relative saw an intruder inside another parked family car while they were driving and on their way to church. The relative confronted the person, police said. The intruder then became violent and pulled out a rifle, shooting at the family. It was in the midst of this gunfire that the 7-year-old child was shot and sustained a leg injury.
The family started a GoFundMe to pay for medical expenses, because they will be without income for months. Well-wishers have donated over $4,800 as of Tuesday afternoon.
Although the 7-year-old boy was shot in the leg, he is expected to survive. He underwent surgery and is now recovering. Due to the severity of his injuries, there is a long road of healing ahead.
