(AbsoluteNews.com) – Republicans have been fighting to protect businesses from frivolous lawsuits related to the coronavirus outbreak. Democrats, on the other hand, are objecting to legal immunity for companies. That has forced Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to put his foot down.
On July 28, the majority leader told CNBC’s Kayla Tausche he will not approve of any COVID-19 relief bill that doesn’t include liability protections for businesses. “We’re not negotiating over” the shields, he said.
The GOP believes there’s no path forward without the protections because healthcare professionals, hospitals, schools and businesses could face an avalanche of litigation. McConnell said these organizations, who are working hard to get the country on track, shouldn’t be sued unless they were “grossly negligent or engaged in intentional harm.”
Democrats think the protections will leave people vulnerable if they get sick as a result of another party’s actions. However, the majority leader made it clear that anyone who is negligent will face consequences. The GOP just doesn’t want frontline workers to be bankrupted by scammers trying to make a quick dollar. It seems reasonable, right?
