MEASLES ALERT: Potential Exposure at Eaton County Restaurants – Take Action Now!

EATON COUNTY, MI – Health officials are currently investigating a potential case of measles in Eaton County. While test results are still pending, the Barry-Eaton District Health Department has taken proactive measures by alerting the public about possible exposure at two local restaurants.

Individuals who visited King Ocean Crab restaurant in Lansing on April 12 from 6:30-10 p.m. or Bad Brads BBQ in Orion Township on April 13 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. are being advised to be vigilant for symptoms of measles, a highly contagious disease.

Measles is notorious for its high level of contagion, as the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area. Health officials emphasize that without immunity, the likelihood of contracting the virus after exposure is approximately 90%.

Dr. Julie Kehdi, medical director of the health department, underscored the importance of taking swift action in response to potential exposure. She stressed the seriousness of measles, especially for children and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Individuals who may have come into contact with measles in the past six days are encouraged to seek post-exposure treatment promptly to prevent illness. Those who were exposed on April 13 should seek treatment by Saturday, April 19.

Health officials urge anyone who believes they may have been exposed to measles to promptly check their vaccination status and seek guidance from their healthcare provider, pharmacy, or local health department. Accessing timely vaccination and information on vaccination is essential in preventing the spread of measles within the community.
