SEATTLE — The Seahawks bolstered their roster by selecting quarterback Jalen Milroe with the 92nd overall pick in the NFL Draft, infusing their offense with both skill and versatility.
Following the announcement, Milroe expressed his excitement during a conference call, saying that hearing his name called was a dream realized. “It’s been a unique journey filled with uncertainty, but I feel confident that this is the right place for me,” he stated, reflecting on the support he received from his family throughout the process.
Milroe emphasized the connection he felt with the Seahawks organization during his visit, highlighting the positive atmosphere cultivated by the coaching staff. “From the moment I arrived, I sensed a community that believes in me,” he said, attributing his strong impression to the welcoming environment during his 30-visit to Seattle.
A former standout at Alabama, Milroe’s collegiate career featured impressive statistics. Over his two years as a starter, he recorded 2,844 passing yards and 16 touchdowns with a completion rate of 64.3 percent. Additionally, he led his team in rushing, amassing 726 yards and scoring 20 rushing touchdowns.
His athletic abilities were on full display during Alabama’s pro day, where he clocked a remarkable 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash. In 2023, Milroe averaged 15.2 yards per completion, ranking him among the top quarterbacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Furthermore, he threw 23 touchdowns against just six interceptions, solidifying his status as a finalist for the Manning Award, recognized as the nation’s best quarterback.
Impressively, Milroe’s achievements extend beyond the field. He was awarded the William V. Campbell Trophy, known as the Academic Heisman, underscoring his excellence as a student-athlete.
Milroe’s adaptability as a quarterback presents an opportunity for him to make an immediate impact in Seattle. Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who previously utilized versatile players like Taysom Hill, recognizes Milroe’s unique strengths while also clarifying that his role will be focused solely on the quarterback position.
When asked about joining a crowded quarterback room featuring veterans like Sam Darnold and Drew Lock, Milroe stated he is eager to learn and contribute positively to the team dynamics. “I’m focused on growing and bringing a competitive spirit every day,” he said, adding that he is determined to identify his niche within the offense while preparing for when his opportunity arises.
Despite some projections placing him as a potential first-round pick, Milroe emphasized the importance of his current situation in Seattle over draft positioning. “What matters most is not where I was picked, but the chance I have to prove myself here,” he remarked. “The Seahawks recognized something in me that other teams didn’t, and I’m ready to embrace that opportunity.”
Milroe’s confidence in his abilities is unwavering. He asserted, “There’s nothing I can’t do on the field,” while acknowledging the need for improvement. He expressed a clear understanding of his skills, stating that he can deliver in various offensive situations, from throwing on the run to making precise progressions.
As the third quarterback chosen by the Seahawks in the past 16 drafts, Milroe joins a select group that includes Russell Wilson and Alex McGough. His addition not only adds depth to the quarterback position but also highlights Seattle’s commitment to nurturing talent with the potential to excel at the next level.
