Moana 2 Makes a Big Splash: International Box Office Hits $66.3M Opening Day

PARIS, France – Disney’s highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2, is making waves in the early international box office markets, raking in an impressive $8.8 million on Wednesday from a total of 10 markets. The film has secured the top spot in each of these markets, with France experiencing its best opening day of 2024 and the second-highest animated opening day of all time. Additionally, Indonesia saw its highest animated launch day ever, setting several market milestones.

As the Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho-led film continues to dominate overseas, its global total through Wednesday has reached $66.3 million. Despite not being in a key holiday period overseas, these early successes in offshore markets are particularly remarkable.

In France, the film’s $3.7 million opening day marks the second-biggest animated debut of all time, only behind Incredibles 2. Indonesia’s $1.2 million debut also achieves a milestone as the biggest animated opening day in the country and the best for a non-local movie in 2024. The film debuted over 8 times higher than its predecessor, Moana, and surpassed other popular animated films like Finding Dory, Incredibles 2, Inside Out 2, and Frozen 2 by significant margins.

Despite facing heavy snowfall in Korea, Moana 2 managed to pull in $1.1 million on Wednesday, marking the third-biggest opening day ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios/Pixar release in the region. Italy’s $900,000 launch day also set a record as the second-best opening day ever for a WDAS title in the country, following Ralph Breaks the Internet.

In the Philippines, the film’s $700,000 debut on Wednesday is the second-highest animated debut ever and the second-best non-local start of 2024. These successful openings set the stage for the film’s upcoming release in Germany, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil today, with additional markets like the UK, Spain, and China set to follow on Friday. This international rollout is expected to cover about 90% of the film’s footprint, with Japan set to premiere a week later on December 6.
