Mother Arrested for Using Settlement Money to Fund Gang Activity

( – In April, a California jury awarded 42-year-old Christina Lopez $4.9 million after Fresno police fatally shot her 16-year-old son, Isiah Murrietta-Golding, in 2017. Just months later, law enforcement arrested her for using the money to do something illegal.

According to a statement by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, homicide detectives investigating a July murder uncovered Lopez’s alleged involvement in funding gang activity.

Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp told reporters Lopez has allegedly used the settlement money to spend thousands of dollars on guns she turned over to her 14-year-old son, who in turn gave them to gang members.

During the course of the investigation, detectives were able to prevent another murder. The gang members were reportedly recruiting Lopez’s son to commit their next hit. The mother’s attorney, Ralph Torres, denied she used the settlement money to buy guns for the gang. He claimed she could account for all of the funds. He said he would need to see what “type of concrete, physical evidence” police have connecting her to the crimes.

In the meantime, prosecutors have charged Lopez with 22 counts of gun trafficking and child endangerment.
