LOS ANGELES, California – A record-setting storm in Los Angeles caused mudslides above and below Mulholland Drive, leading to a closure of the road on Wednesday. The slides were reported near Skyline and Bowmont drives, just south of Fryman Canyon Park, prompting the closure of the canyon road for repairs.
Following the storm that brought steady rain to the area, video footage showed crumbling hillsides at multiple locations above and below the road, with mud covering part of the road. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries resulting from the mudslides.
City Councilwoman Nithya Raman stated that the city responded to numerous reports of slides on residential streets near various canyons and glens. As a result, drivers were advised to avoid the affected areas.
The record-setting storm, which arrived on Sunday, delivered 7.03 inches of rain, marking downtown LA’s highest two-day rainfall total for the month of February. The rain also resulted in flood watches for parts of Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties, with the possibility of scattered showers and heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, the Los Angeles County is expected to receive an additional half-inch to 1.5 inches of rain by Friday, raising the threat of further slides on already soaked hillsides. As a result of the storm, the Los Angeles Fire Department received over 300 reports of slides, leading to some buildings being declared red-tagged and uninhabitable. With the rain chance expected to continue through the week, residents in the area are urged to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
