Police say “multiple explosions” have caused a fire at a chemical plant on Colonel’s Island, forcing residents to evacuate.

According to the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office, the fire is affecting the Symrise Chemical Plant outside of Brunswick.

The plant has been evacuated, and multiple explosions have been reported, according to the sheriff’s office. Fire departments are on the scene, and more are on the way.

There was no immediate indication of what caused the explosions.

On its website, Symrise says it creates “inspiring fragrance, flavor, natural nutrition and cosmetic ingredient solutions” for brands.

As of first estimates, no employees or residents have been injured, and local fire brigades and police are fully controlling the situation on site.”

Symrise has no reason to believe that the fire will cause additional health hazards to the nearby community, according to a statement.

In a later statement, the Glynn County Board of Commissioners said the blaze was “contained” and “would burn out.”

It was necessary to evacuate the communities of Hickory Bluff, Satilla Shores and Royal Oaks, according to the board.
