New GOP Bill Protects History

( – Vandalism to statues across the country has continued despite the warnings from lawmakers and the Trump Administration. The DOJ has vowed to prosecute the criminals to the fullest extent of the law. Many have been arrested, but unfortunately, that hasn’t been enough.

In response to the violence and defacement of our monuments, one GOP lawmaker introduced a bill to address the problem and help out the Trump admin.

Protecting Our Statues

On July 16, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) introduced legislation to protect statues from rioters. The bill, dubbed the “Protect America’s Statues Act of 2020” also blocks local and state governments from receiving federal grants if they refuse to uphold law and order.

In addition to McCarthy, Reps. Sam Graves (R-MO) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) also signed on to sponsor the bill. The minority leader said the reason he believed it’s important to put the legislation forward is that it’s “wrong to erase our history.” Instead, the Republican congressman thinks America should learn from its past.

Supporting The President

If you recall, President Donald Trump’s executive order laid out many of the same goals. It also defunded local and state governments for not protecting federal monuments, memorials and statues.

Although the commander-in-chief’s order holds a lot of weight, it’s always better when Congress acts to make it law. Without an act from the legislative branch, the next president could undo Trump’s directives with a swipe of a pen. It should fall to our lawmakers to fix these problems in the first place.

Hopefully, the legislation will be passed into law, but also become unnecessary. Local governments need to do more to protect their cities as a whole. Currently, far too many Democratically-run urban areas have been taken over by anarchists who have no respect for the country in which they live. That’s the very big underlying issue that needs to be solved.
