The attempted robbery of a Brinks armored truck in East Oakland resulted in the death of one person and the injuries of two others, police said.

A shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Napa Auto Parts store near 44th Ave. and International Blvd. The Brinks truck could be seen next to a body covered by a yellow tarp in a video from Chopper 5.

Brinks employees and attackers exchanged gunfire, according to KCBS Radio reporter Alice Wertz.

Officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before 2 p.m., Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said. When police arrived, they discovered two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

One person died at the scene after firefighters and ambulance crews responded. The police did not say if the person was a suspect or an employee of Brinks.

A second person, identified by Armstrong as a Brinks employee, was transported to the hospital and was in stable condition as of Friday afternoon. As a result of gunfire, an innocent bystander was also sent to the hospital.

Armstrong referred to the situation as a terrible one that took place in broad daylight.
In his statement, the chief stated that investigators believed the shooting was motivated by robbery. The FBI and police are investigating.

Investigators are searching for several individuals in a white vehicle, Armstrong said. Additional information about potential suspects was not immediately available.

Multiple deadly shootings have occurred in Oakland streets during the past week, making Friday’s shooting the city’s 92nd this year.

“The City of Oakland has had a tough week,” Armstrong said. “The community is asked to continue to bring forth information that can be used to solve these crimes. We are also asking for help getting rid of guns that have plagued our community for too long.”
In a statement to KPIX 5, a Brinks spokesperson said, “We can confirm there was an incident involving a Brinks crew, and we are working with law enforcement. We do not have any further information at this time.”

Police and the California Highway Patrol report at least five deaths in Oakland this week. A shooting on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland was one of those deaths.

Ninety-two homicides have been committed in Oakland so far this year.
