Parents charged with toddler’s death after fentanyl overdose

HOLBROOK, NY – The parents of toddler Joseph Adonis, who resided in Long Island, have been indicted following the young boy’s death due to what is believed to be a fentanyl overdose. A 911 call made on January 3rd reported the 14-month-old child as unresponsive at his family’s apartment in Holbrook. Later pronounced dead, early toxicology reports revealed traces of cocaine, fentanyl, and morphine in his blood.

It’s alleged that these fatal drugs were stored improperly within Joseph’s bedroom, leaving them within the reach of him and an 11-year-old. Also said to be unsecured in the same area were loaded firearms and drug scales.

The couple has been identified as Wilkens Adonis and Daryllee Leibrock, who are both facing charges of drug possession and endangering the welfare of a child. “An infinitesimally small amount of this poison can come in contact with a child and result in that child’s death,” stated the Suffolk County District Attorney, Ray Tierney.

Last year alone saw 133 children aged five and under succumbing to Fentanyl. Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine voiced his concerns on the matter, pondering over how society is failing to protect its children from the widespread harms of opioids and drugs.

Leibrock has pleaded not guilty, her attorney has called the incident a tragedy and mentioned that she had been ordered to keep away from Joseph. Interestingly, she recently announced her pregnancy on social media.

Adonis’ attorney maintains his client’s innocence, stating that there were quite a few people moving in and out of the house, and he was unaware of any drugs or guns present. An open warrant for their failure to appear in court on previous drug charges has resulted in both Adonis and Leibrock being held on bail.
