London, England – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met at a summit in London to discuss a plan to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. During the meeting, Starmer presented a framework where Europe would take the lead in securing peace, with strong support from the United States.
The proposal comes after a series of emergency talks held by European leaders following a heated exchange between President Trump and President Zelensky in Washington, D.C. The leaders of over a dozen countries gathered over the weekend to work on a roadmap for peace and security in Ukraine as the conflict with Russia enters its third year.
Starmer emphasized that Europe must take the lead in securing a lasting peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, with the United Kingdom playing a prominent role. At a press conference, he outlined the key priorities of the plan, including providing substantial financial support to Ukraine and ensuring the country’s sovereignty and security.
As part of the proposal, the United Kingdom pledged to offer a loan of 2.26 billion British pounds to Ukraine, funded by frozen Russian assets. Additionally, Ukraine will have access to 1.6 billion pounds in export finance to purchase air defense missiles. European leaders also discussed the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defensive capabilities to protect against potential future invasions.
Starmer talked about forming a “coalition of the willing” among countries willing to contribute troops to defend long-term peace in Ukraine. He mentioned that several nations have expressed interest in joining the coalition and preparing soldiers and aircraft for deployment.
The British Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the United States’ involvement in the plan, without sending its own troops. He assured that discussions with President Trump had taken place, despite recent tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine.
Starmer stressed that while the priority is to help Ukraine achieve long-term peace, it should not come at the expense of a weak deal that Russia can easily breach. He emphasized the need to defend Ukraine to prevent a broader conflict in Europe, underscoring the historical consequences of conflicts on the continent.
The proposed plan aims to secure a lasting peace in Ukraine with the support of European nations, the United Kingdom, and the United States. By working together and ensuring Ukraine’s security and stability, the leaders hope to bring an end to the ongoing war and prevent further escalation in the region.
