According to Georgia authorities, the mother of missing toddler Quinton Simon is the prime suspect.

“We regret to inform Quinton Simon’s family that the Chatham County Police Department and the FBI believe he has passed away,” the department tweeted around 10:30 p.m. “We have named his mother, Leilani Simon, as the prime suspect in his disappearance and death. However, no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.”

A week ago, the 20-month-old was last seen by his parents in Savannah, Georgia.

On Thursday, the department will hold a press briefing to give more details, and no other information will be released until then.

” This news will break the hearts of thousands of people around the world, and we share your sorrow,” the department said.

Leilani Simon, 22, was seen leaving her family’s Savannah house on Wednesday afternoon before returning shortly thereafter. It was the first time since her son disappeared that she had been publicly seen.

According to reports, the child lives with his brother, his maternal grandparents, and his mother’s boyfriend.

Thomas and Billie Jo Howell, Quinton’s grandparents, told WSAV-TV they are his legal guardians.

Howell told the news station, “He’s just a baby.”. “I just want him to come home.”

In addition, his babysitter told the station she received an odd text telling her not to come to the house for work the morning he disappeared.

This morning, she got a text that they wouldn’t be here and wouldn’t be babysitting them at 5:29 a.m. She was reportedly referring to the mother’s absence as being odd.

Other relatives of Quinton called her hours later to ask if she had seen him.

A team of investigators and search K-9s will return to the residence on Wednesday, the department announced earlier.

“We will gather and analyze evidence today,” police said. “A media briefing is scheduled for tomorrow.”
