Puerto Rico Votes to Approve Statehood (REPORT)

(AbsoluteNews.com) – The election results are being hotly contested in the mainland US. It’s still unclear, despite the totals, who the president of the US is going to be. The Trump Campaign is currently taking multiple states to court over voter fraud allegations.

As that gets sorted out, Puerto Rico is trying to decide their next steps following a key vote in the US territory. Specifically, could they be the 51st state?

Puerto Rico Votes for Statehood

On Tuesday, November 3, Puerto Ricans turned out to vote on whether the tiny island should become a US state. When the ballots were tallied, 52% of voters said, “Yes.” The nonbinding ballot measure passed for the second time in three years. However, voter turnout in the country was incredibly low.

There are roughly 2.36 million voters on the island, but only 51% actually cast ballots this time around. So, although 52% of those voters who turned out have a favorable opinion about statehood, it’s just a fraction of citizens.

The vote, as we said, was non-binding. That’s because Congress has to introduce a bill making Puerto Rico a state, which isn’t likely to pass. Before Hurricane Maria, the island had an incredible amount of debt. After the devastating natural disaster, it only got worse.

The island has been in turmoil for years, and corruption has been pervasive. In fact, on Thursday, November 5, police arrested lawmaker Nestor Alonso for corruption. The charges came just two days after he won re-election. US Attorney Stephen Muldrow held a press conference announcing the charges and accused the lawmaker of theft, receiving kickbacks and fraud.

Just last year, Governor Ricardo Rosselló resigned after being accused of corruption. The Secretary of Justice, Wanda Vázquez, succeeded him as governor in 2019 but lost her re-election bid under allegations of corruption.

It’s hard to imagine lawmakers in the US will want to grant Puerto Rico statehood when there is so much dirty dealing happening. The American people aren’t likely to be pleased with the prospect either.
