Moscow, Russia — In a move signaling a potential shift in diplomatic efforts, President Vladimir Putin has called for immediate negotiations with Ukraine, suggesting that talks could commence as early as May 15. Speaking in a rare televised address from the Kremlin late Saturday, Putin emphasized the importance of direct discussions to address the underlying issues fueling the extended conflict. “We seek serious talks to pave the way for a lasting, robust peace,” he stated.
This announcement follows a visit to Ukraine by European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who pressed for an unconditional ceasefire lasting 30 days. In response to these appeals, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that while Moscow would consider the demand, any attempts to exert pressure on Russia would be ineffective.
Putin indicated that he is open to the possibility of establishing new ceasefires during the proposed talks, which he suggested should take place in Istanbul, Turkey. He is scheduled to discuss the initiative with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday.
Despite the optimistic tone from Moscow, Ukraine has yet to publicly respond to Putin’s offer. During his speech, the Russian leader accused Ukraine of failing to engage with previous ceasefire proposals, which included halting attacks on energy infrastructure and a ceasefire observed during World War II commemorative events. Kyiv has previously contended that Russian offensives continued unabated during these supposed lulls in fighting.
“Regardless of the challenges, we extend the invitation for the Ukrainian authorities to resume negotiations without any preconditions,” Putin stated. The last direct interactions between Moscow and Kyiv took place shortly after the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion over three years ago.
The international community remains skeptical about the sincerity of Russia’s overtures, given the ongoing nature of military engagements. Analysts suggest that while Putin’s call for talks may be a tactical maneuver to alleviate pressures both domestically and from abroad, the realities on the ground indicate a complex path toward peace.
