Quarterback Daniel Jones Signs $14 Million Contract with Colts, Challenging Anthony Richardson – Vikings Left with McCarthy as Only QB Option

Indianapolis, Indiana – Free agent quarterback Daniel Jones is on the verge of signing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, sources close to the negotiations revealed on Tuesday. The move comes after Jones declined an opportunity to return to the Minnesota Vikings, opting instead to compete with 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson for the starting quarterback position in 2025.

Having spent time on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad in the final months of the previous regular season, Jones now looks to make his mark with the Colts following a tumultuous exit from the New York Giants. Despite starting the Giants’ initial 10 games last season, Jones found himself relegated to third-string status after a slow start. The decision was made in part to safeguard the quarterback from potential injury, which could have triggered guaranteed years on his contract.

Seeking a fresh start, Jones secured his release from the Giants and eventually joined the Vikings, fully aware that his playing opportunities would be limited. He was added to the active roster for the playoffs but did not see any action during the team’s wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

As the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft, Jones boasts experience from 69 games over six seasons, with his best performance coming in 2022. During that season, he led the Giants to their sole playoff appearance under his tenure, amassing career-high numbers in passing yards, touchdowns, and interceptions. Despite facing struggles throughout his career, Jones has accumulated over 14,000 passing yards with 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions in the NFL.

With his impending move to the Colts, Jones aims to make an impact and cement his place as a starting quarterback in the league. Time will tell how his talents and experience will mesh with his new team as they gear up for the upcoming season.
