Anker, based in San Francisco, California, has announced a voluntary recall of several power bank models due to safety concerns, urging consumers to stop using these devices immediately. The company has indicated that the products pose a risk of overheating and potential fires, prompting an urgent response to protect customers.
This recall follows a previous warning this month regarding the A1263 PowerCore 10000 power banks, which were flagged for similar issues stemming from lithium-ion batteries sourced from one of Anker’s suppliers. The company has identified five additional models that should also no longer be used, although details on the specific timeframes for purchase are currently lacking.
Consumers can identify the affected models by checking the serial numbers printed on the back or side of the power banks. In an effort to ease the situation for those impacted, Anker is offering U.S. customers the option of a free replacement power bank or a gift card for future purchases on their website. Claims can be made by submitting a recall form online alongside proof of purchase or a verified serial number.
Anker has flagged that the problematic models were sold between June 1, 2016, and December 31, 2022, for the A1263 recall. However, there has been no specific timeline issued regarding the additional five models, some of which were available for purchase even after the company’s initial alert.
Customers are advised to dispose of the affected power banks responsibly. Anker has stressed that these products should not be discarded in regular trash or recycling bins due to the fire hazard associated with lithium-ion batteries. Instead, disposal should be done at designated facilities that accept such batteries.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported receiving 19 accounts of fires linked to the A1263 models. While it remains unclear if similar incidents have been reported with the newly recalled models, Anker’s rapid response and the scale of the recall indicate a serious commitment to addressing safety concerns.
To ensure compliance, Anker has notified global regulatory bodies about the recall. The company’s proactive measures reflect its aim to prioritize customer safety amid growing scrutiny around battery technology in consumer electronics.
