Foxborough, Massachusetts – Star wide receiver Stefon Diggs met with the New England Patriots in Foxborough last week as he continues to recover from ACL reconstruction surgery that took place roughly four months ago. The talented receiver was on track for his seventh consecutive 1,000-yard season before suffering a torn ACL in October of last year. Despite the injury setback, there is a sense of optimism that Diggs could potentially be ready to play by Week 1, according to reports.
Last year, Diggs was traded from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans along with two day-three draft picks in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick. In Houston, Diggs was brought in by former Patriots executive Nick Caserio, and he also has ties to the Patriots coaching staff through offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’s brother, Ben, who serves as the Texans’ wide receivers coach. Diggs also previously worked under current Pats receivers coach Todd Downing during his time in Minnesota.
Known for his exceptional performance on the field, Diggs was one of the top receivers in the NFL last season prior to his injury, ranking second out of 116 qualified receivers in ESPN’s receiver score metric. In just eight games in 2024, he recorded 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns. If projected over a full 17-game season, Diggs would have finished with impressive stats of 100 catches for 1,054 yards and six touchdowns.
Before joining the Texans and playing alongside quarterback C.J. Stroud, Diggs played a significant role in quarterback Josh Allen’s success with the Buffalo Bills. In his first season with the Bills in 2020, Diggs led the NFL in receptions with 127 and in receiving yards with 1,535. He earned Pro Bowl selections and led the team to the playoffs in each of his four seasons in Buffalo, where he made a lasting impact against rivals like the Patriots, averaging over 80 receiving yards and scoring seven touchdowns in just eight games against them.
The addition of Stefon Diggs to the Patriots’ receiving corps comes at an opportune time, as the team had been seeking a star receiver. Despite Diggs recovering from a significant injury, his arrival in New England is seen as a major acquisition that could potentially elevate the performance of second-year quarterback Drake Maye, much like Diggs did for Allen in Buffalo.
Joining a group of promising young receivers in the Patriots’ lineup, Diggs brings experience and talent to the team. The already solid receiving room includes players like Bourne, Hollins, Douglas, Boutte, Polk, and Baker. With the potential addition of another receiver in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, the Patriots’ offense is poised to make a significant impact with the inclusion of Diggs as their star pass-catcher.
