Mountain View, California — Google is set to unveil a revamped version of its Clock app at the upcoming I/O 2025 event, as evident from recent design leaks. The redesign aligns with the Material 3 Expressive initiative, aimed at enhancing user interface aesthetics and functionality.
Recent screenshots reveal that the updated interface will feature a sleeker bottom navigation bar with a more refined pill-shaped indicator. Users will notice slight modifications to tab icons, which now provide enhanced detail. Notably, the “Clock” tab will be renamed to “World Clock,” while the existing “Alarms” and “Timers” sections receive a bit of a polish.
The Alarms section retains its signature large floating action button but has been updated to a rounded square shape, positioned in the bottom-right corner. When editing or creating an alarm, users will interact with a new sheet layout that includes a time selector, as well as options for naming the alarm, selecting sounds, setting vibrations, checking weather forecasts, and utilizing Google Assistant Routines. Throughout the app, a new font promises a fresh look.
One of the most striking changes in the active alarms list is the highlighting of the background for currently set alarms, making them more visually distinct. Additionally, the “Dismiss” button has been made larger and more accessible, complemented by narrower toggles for on/off options.
The Timer interface introduces familiar increment settings at the bottom, allowing users to set a name right away. Instead of the traditional “play” icon, a straightforward “Start” button will now initiate timers. The design adjustments extend to the active timer display, where the play and pause functions have been integrated into a central circle for easier operation.
The Stopwatch feature has seen significant modifications as well; it has shifted away from its circular design to a more digit-focused display. This simplification replaces smaller icons with larger text buttons for Stop, Reset, and Lap, improving usability.
While the Bedtime tab remains largely unchanged, details about the World Clock feature are still under wraps. Importantly, the Clock app has reportedly transitioned to being “100%” built with Jetpack Compose, Google’s latest toolkit designed for creating user interfaces on Android.
This comprehensive redesign appears to streamline functionality while also prioritizing a more intuitive user experience. As the launch date approaches, it remains to be seen whether these innovations will align with user expectations and overall usability goals.
