Congressman Pens Official Letter Urging Retaliation Against Republicans
(RightWing.org) – It seems some Democrats don’t want to play nice with others. While most of us learned to get along in kindergarten, at least one Dem congressman feels that “getting even” for perceived injustices is the way to go.
In a letter of blatant hypocrisy, one Democratic congressman is calling on all Republican House members to be summarily kicked out of Congress. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) wrote House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) outright saying House members who signed onto the Texas lawsuit to defend voter rights nationwide against voter fraud should be removed from Congress.
It’s not the New Jersey congressman’s first time to call for punishing his political opponents. Just a few weeks ago, Pascrell said in a press release that President Donald Trump and his “enablers” should be “tried for their crimes against our nation and Constitution.” Additionally, Pascrell has tried to get members of Trump’s legal team disbarred for their work in rooting out mail-in voter fraud and ensuring the integrity of the election.
Pascrell Twists the Constitution
Pascrell has a history of smearing Republicans, but this instance is above par. In the letter to Pelosi, the representative argues two articles in the Constitution give Congress the authority to decide its own members’ fates under specific conditions.
In the wake of the Civil War, there were disputes about seating senators from former Confederate states. Article 1, Section 5, gave members the right to remove questionable members from Southern states that might not have been loyal to the United States. However, in the modern era, it’s only used when there is a challenge to the declared winner of an election.
Here is the problem for Pascrell… Article 1, Section 5 only deals with contested elections. Congress cannot remove duly elected persons who meet the qualifications for membership.
Article 14 Section 3 of the United States Constitution spells out the method to kick-out members of Congress for sedition and treason against the government. However, how is questioning if it’s Constitutional for governors and administrations to change election law without input from a legislative body an act of sedition or treason?
Petty Partisan Politics
The vindictive punishment that Pascrell is calling for reeks of hypocrisy. Democrats and the deep state have tried viciously to remove President Trump from office for four years. If that doesn’t meet the requirements of Article 14, Section 3, what does?
Pascrell is playing petty partisan politics, and in doing so is only inflaming passions unnecessarily. The good news is that this type of behavior is what led Republicans to pick up seats in the House and give Democrats the narrowest majority in nearly a century.
