(AbsoluteNews.com) – Japan is one of the many countries to enact sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine. The country’s defense ministry also reported it spotted something bizarre recently: four large Russian warships headed through the Tsuruga Strait.
On Thursday, March 17, the Japanese Defense Ministry revealed it had tracked four Russian amphibious ships near its country. The department said the ships traveled from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Japan and then through the Tsugaru Strait. They released photos of the ships and one appeared to have military trucks onboard.

A Defense Ministry spokesperson said it’s unusual for Russian ships to pass through the strait. He added “it is possible” they were headed for Ukraine, where the war between the two countries is into its third week and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
However, Japan has its own problems with Russia. After the end of WWII, the former soviet country began occupying the Kuril Islands, which belong to Japan. The Japanese have spent decades trying to regain control and recently described Russia’s claims of ownership as an “occupation against international order.” It’s unclear whether the two nations will be able to peacefully settle the dispute.
