Senate votes to pass $40 billion Ukraine aid package – CNN

The Senate approved a $40 billion military and humanitarian aid package for Ukraine on Thursday, demonstrating the remarkable bipartisan support on Capitol Hill for a massive investment in Ukraine’s war effort.

The Senate passed a bill to provide emergency aid to Ukraine, saying that the United States cannot afford to let Vladimir Putin continue his war against the Ukrainian people.

The bill passed on Thursday would authorize the transfer of $11 billion in weapons, equipment, and defense supplies to Ukraine and allocate $9 billion to replenish the stockpile. It would also provide $8.8 billion for government support and $4.4 billion for international disaster assistance.

However, not all lawmakers are on board with the push to send an additional $40 billion in aid to Ukraine. Some Republican senators have taken issue with the high price tag of the legislation and the fact that the cost is not offset and have expressed concerns that European countries are not contributing enough funds.
Eleven Republican senators voted against the final passage of the bill: Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, John Boozman of Arkansas, Mike Braun of Indiana, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Mike Lee of Utah, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama.
In addition, these lawmakers have concerns about oversight of aid use since its sheer amount and velocity have increased rapidly.  The last thing anyone wants is another 1 trillion dollar price tag on another war zone. The United States has already provided more than $6.5 billion worth of aid to Ukraine since the onset of Putin’s invasion.
