China Alarms US With New Private Warnings to Avoid Taiwan Strait – Bloomberg
Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said China would not hesitate to crush any attempt by Taiwan to “secede” if the US responded “militarily” to China’s actions.
Wei said the US Indo-Pacific strategy is an attempt to hijack countries in the region and target one specific country. (China)
Wei’s harshest criticisms of Washington were reserved for its support for Taiwan, which Beijing considers its territory despite never having ruled it. Washington has remained intentionally ambiguous on whether it would intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese attack.
Wei said that China would reunite with Taiwan and that the People’s Liberation Army would fight to the end to prevent Taiwan from seceding.
The Chinese defense minister said his country would never seek hegemony or engage in military expansion in the region.
During the Shangri-La conference, China faced criticism for what the U.S. Government sees as violations of international laws.
China has militarized various man-made islands in the South China Sea, but the US is muscling in by sending naval ships into the waterway. Wei said Washington must stop smearing Beijing and interfere in China’s internal affairs for relations to improve.
As tensions escalate in the region Japan recently said it would seek ‘offensive strike’ weapons to ‘defend’ its aircraft.
