Shooting near Michigan State Fair kills 14-year-old boy

NOVI, MI – A deadly shooting occurred near the Michigan State Fair in Novi, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old boy and injuring another on Saturday evening. The event has sparked an ongoing investigation by the Novi Police Department alongside multiple law enforcement agencies.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots around 9:56 pm in the vicinity of the Suburban Collection Showplace’s parking area. Authorities initially treated the situation as an active shooter scenario, amassing a rapid response from neighboring law enforcement organizations.

Both victims in the incident, who were just 14 years of age, were promptly admitted to a nearby hospital. Despite the swift action, one boy tragically succumbed to his injuries, whereas the other one is reportedly stable.

Findings from the preliminary stages of the investigation suggest that the victims traveled to the Fairgrounds from Detroit using an Uber service before the incident. From the evidence gathered thus far, authorities believe that a dispute from earlier in the week had spilled over to the fairgrounds and escalated into a lethal encounter.

The Novi Police Department seeks insights from the public that may aid in their continuing investigation, which also involves the Michigan State Police and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Michigan State Fair plans to continue its operations despite Saturday’s tragic events but will introduce stricter security measures, including an increased police presence and changes to entry policies and operational hours.

State Representative Kelly Breen voiced her shock and anger on social media, reminding people that such heinous acts of violence do not represent the community. Likewise, Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell expressed her anger by voicing the senselessness surrounding the young boy’s untimely death.
