LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A tragic incident unfolded on Friday night at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, leaving three people dead and 15 others injured. Authorities announced on Sunday that a 20-year-old man, Tomas Rivas, along with three teenagers, have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection to the shooting. The individuals arrested included two 17-year-old males and a 15-year-old male, with the potential of facing murder charges as the investigation continues.

The violence erupted during an unauthorized car show that attracted around 200 people to the park, leading to a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. The victims of the shooting ranged in age from 16 to 36, with nine males and six females being either treated at the scene or transported to hospitals. Tragically, Andrew Madrid, 16, Jason Gomez, 18, and Dominick Estrada, 19, lost their lives as a result of the shooting, according to officials.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, authorities are actively seeking video footage from the park and information from witnesses. The police, fire departments, and various community organizations are providing assistance and support to the victims and their families at the Las Cruces Convention Center. Crisis counseling, spiritual guidance, and access to local resources and financial aid are among the services being offered to those impacted by the incident.

Police Chief Jeremy Story indicated that there were between 50 and 60 shell casings found at the park, suggesting that multiple shooters and weapons were involved in the shooting. The investigation is being supported by various law enforcement agencies, including the New Mexico State Police, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, and ATF. Story also highlighted the prevalence of illegal car shows at Young Park, acknowledging a history of understaffing during such events, which unfortunately was the case on the night of the shooting.

Representative Gabe Vasquez, who represents the district where the shooting occurred, emphasized the need for collaboration among local authorities to enhance security in the park and support the car enthusiast community. The incident at Young Park underscored the chaotic and dangerous environment that unfolded, posing a threat not only from firearms but also from reckless driving. Las Cruces, situated along the Rio Grande in southern New Mexico, about 40 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, is now left in mourning and seeking answers in the wake of this senseless act of violence.

As investigations continue and the community begins the healing process, the focus remains on seeking justice for the victims, understanding the circumstances that led to this tragic event, and implementing measures to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
