South Carolina man dies of a heart attack while burying the body of a woman he killed; police say – USA TODAY

Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office officers found a 60-year-old man dead in his yard and the body of a 65-year-old woman in a pit.

Authorities suspected McKinnon died of natural causes, but autopsies showed Dent was killed by strangulation. They believe McKinnon strangled Dent, bound and wrapped her in trash bags, and dug a grave.

Is the murder wave a trending pattern?

The F.B.I reports the estimated number of murders in the United States in 2019 was 16,425. This was an increase from the 2018 estimate, a 3.4 percent increase from the 2015 figure, and 11.6 percent increase from the number in 2010.

Due to restrictions during the last two years, data was not yet reported for either period.

A study by the Council on Criminal Justice found that homicides in 22 major American cities increased in 2021, but the pace of the increase slowed.

At least 10 U.S. cities lost historic numbers of residents to murder last year.

The Council also reported documented increases in violent crimes in 2021, including robberies and carjackings, although drug violations and most property crimes fell. Motor vehicle theft rose 14%.

The Council on Criminal Justice is a nonpartisan invitational membership organization and think tank that advances understanding of the criminal justice policy challenges facing the nation and builds consensus for solutions based on facts, evidence, and fundamental principles of justice.
