LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Sovereignty surged to victory in the 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, overcoming the favored contender, Journalism, to claim the prestigious title. Ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott, Sovereignty completed the race, covering a distance of 1.25 miles, in 2 minutes and 2.31 seconds.
The day began with Citizen Bull leading the pack in challenging, muddy conditions. As the race progressed, Sovereignty and Journalism maneuvered to the forefront as they navigated the final stretch. The third choice at 7-1 odds, Sovereignty showcased impressive stamina, pulling ahead to secure a win by one and a half lengths, thrilling a crowd of 147,046 spectators.
Mott expressed satisfaction with the race’s dynamics. “Fortunately, there was a lot of speed in the race,” he noted, emphasizing how the strong early pace worked to Sovereignty’s advantage. “An honest pace can spread the field, and it allows you the chance to position your horse strategically.”
This victory marks a significant milestone for both Alvarado and the ownership group, Godolphin LLC, marking their first Kentucky Derby win. For Mott, it’s a repeat achievement; he previously won in 2019 with Country House in a race that saw controversy due to a competitor’s interference.
Before the race, renowned gymnast Simone Biles, a seven-time Olympic gold medalist, signalled the start of festivities with the traditional “riders up” call. This ceremonial role has recently been entrusted to various celebrities, including TV personality Martha Stewart and NFL star Patrick Mahomes.
Journalism, who entered the race as the 3-1 favorite following a four-race winning streak, faced a tough challenge on the muddy track. Jockey Umberto Rispoli acknowledged the disappointment among supporters. “On a fair track, I think I had the better horse,” he reflected, alluding to the conditions that may have affected the outcome.
