SteamOS Revolution: Valve Unveils "Compatible" Games Label, Promising Over 18,000 Titles for New Handhelds!

Valve has announced a significant expansion for its Linux-based SteamOS, setting the stage for new handheld gaming PCs beyond its popular Steam Deck. The company is starting this initiative with specific models of the Asus ROG Ally, a move that signals a broader commitment to diversifying the hardware that can run SteamOS.

In an update expected in the coming weeks, Valve will introduce a “SteamOS Compatible” label on its storefront. This label aims to clarify whether games, along with their required middleware, operate seamlessly on SteamOS. The designation will cover aspects like gameplay, launcher functionality, and anti-cheat systems. Conversely, games that do not meet these criteria will be marked as “SteamOS Unsupported.” Although it’s worth noting that a “supported” label does not guarantee that issues won’t arise, the intention is to provide users with greater insights into game compatibility.

To kick off this initiative, Valve estimates that more than 18,000 titles will receive the “SteamOS Compatible” label immediately. Importantly, game developers will not need to undertake additional steps to receive this designation if their games are already compatible with the Steam Deck, simplifying the transition for many titles.

SteamOS’s underlying technology relies on Proton, a collection of app translation tools that allow a variety of Windows applications to run on the operating system. This innovation has markedly enhanced the compatibility of games on SteamOS compared to earlier iterations, which required titles to support Linux natively. However, Proton does have limitations, and not every Windows game is guaranteed to run without issues.

As Valve broadens its support for SteamOS, the company aims to create a more inclusive ecosystem for different gaming platforms, enhancing the experience for users who seek alternatives to traditional gaming consoles. With these updates, Valve is taking strategic steps to solidify its foothold in the competitive gaming market while fostering a community that embraces diverse hardware options.
