His cat, although healthy, became understandably perturbed by the process, particularly after the gel application that is often used for echocardiograms. With typical feline heart rates averaging around 140 beats per minute, Revoy struggled to obtain an accurate measurement through traditional palpation methods.
Determined to find a workaround, Revoy experimented with a basic stethoscope and a USB lavalier microphone, creating a makeshift digital stethoscope. The adaptation was relatively straightforward: he detached the silicone tubing from the stethoscope’s head and connected the microphone, merging the two devices into an effective tool for his needs.
The real challenge, however, lay in getting Geuloush to cooperate during the recording sessions. After some persistence, Revoy successfully captured a clean audio file of his cat’s heartbeat. He then analyzed the sound in an audio editing program, counting the peaks to calculate the beats per second.
While this DIY method may not rival the advanced smart stethoscopes available today, its effectiveness lies in its simplicity. Revoy’s approach highlights how resourcefulness and a bit of creativity can empower pet owners facing similar obstacles.
There is potential to further streamline the process; for instance, a small electronic counter could be implemented using a microcontroller. This would eliminate the need for Revoy to count while hoping Geuloush takes a nap nearby, as cats often find keyboards irresistible.
