Stolen car pursued by police goes flying off cliff

CARLSBAD, CA – An intense car chase in Carlsbad took a dramatic turn when a vehicle plunged off a cliff, landing with a crash on the beach below. The incident began around 4 p.m. when police attempted to stop a driver near the Carlsbad Fleet Maintenance Department on Impala Drive, but the driver had other plans.

Local resident Bill witnessed the dramatic moment as he strolled nearby. “I heard a big crash and saw dirt flying everywhere,” he recalled, describing the scene as the car soared over the edge of Carlsbad Boulevard.

Police initiated the pursuit after spotting the vehicle driving through a fence at the maintenance facility. Despite officers’ efforts to halt the driver, they sped away, prompting a high-speed chase. However, safety concerns led the primary officer to call off the pursuit near Palomar Airport.

Even after the pursuit was terminated, the driver continued at a high speed, eventually veering off the roadway and over the cliff. Miraculously, the driver survived the crash but sustained major injuries. Paramedics rushed them to a nearby hospital, where they are expected to recover.

Authorities have yet to release the driver’s identity, and investigations are ongoing as police seek to uncover the reasons behind the reckless drive. Preliminary findings indicate that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement faces in balancing pursuit with public safety. As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers that might explain this dramatic episode.
