Police said the shooting appeared isolated and happened outside medical offices on Cottle Road.
SAN JOSE, CA — A man suspected of shooting a woman outside Kaiser Permanente medical offices in South San Jose died Monday after the gunfire, while the woman remained critically injured, police and Kaiser officials said.
The shooting brought police and emergency crews to the 5700 block of Cottle Road shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, June 8. Authorities said the man and woman knew each other, but detectives were still working to determine their relationship and what led to the violence. Kaiser said the injured woman worked at the medical offices.
San Jose police said officers responded at about 10:14 a.m. to an outdoor parking area shared by several Kaiser medical office buildings. The man and woman were found with at least one gunshot wound each and were taken to local hospitals with life-threatening injuries. The man later died. Police said they believe he was the suspect. San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said investigators did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public.
Police had not released the names or ages of the man or woman as of Tuesday. Officials also had not said what kind of firearm was used, how many shots were fired or whether the weapon was recovered at the scene. Detectives have not publicly classified the case as an attempted murder-suicide. Shih said the man and woman were known to each other, but the exact nature of that relationship remained under investigation.
Kaiser Permanente said the woman was an employee at the facility but did not identify her job title. “This was a personal matter, with the shooter coming to our employee’s place of work,” Kaiser said in a statement. The company said it was cooperating with San Jose police and thanked staff, security personnel and first responders for their response. Kaiser also said the event was isolated and that there was no continuing threat to employees, physicians, patients, members or visitors.
The shooting happened at 5755 Cottle Road, part of Kaiser Permanente’s San Jose medical campus area. The location includes nonemergency services such as psychiatry, vision care and rehabilitation services. It sits near Kaiser’s San Jose Medical Center and a retail area in the Village Oaks neighborhood south of downtown San Jose. Police said the gunfire occurred outside, not inside a treatment room or hospital emergency department.
Investigators remained at the scene Monday as officers collected evidence and worked to build a timeline. Police said the case was still active, and no additional suspects were being sought based on early findings. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office is expected to identify the man after relatives are notified. Police have not announced any criminal charges because the suspected shooter is dead.
The shooting rattled a busy medical office area where workers, patients and visitors move between appointments through nearby parking lots. Kaiser said its first concern was the safety and well-being of employees, physicians, patients, members and visitors. Police and Kaiser both stressed that the danger appeared to be limited to the two people involved, while detectives continued to review what happened before the gunfire.
As of Tuesday, June 9, the woman’s name had not been released and her condition was described as critical. Police said the motive and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remained under investigation.
